Bus interchange repurposed

Project overview

Bishan has always been an area described as "boring" and oftentimes I find myself agreeing to that. With the modernisation of transportation, I believe the bishan bus interchange, which by the way takes up a sizeable area, can be repurposed into something more interesting in the future.

Site of interchange

Bird's eye view and real pictures of the bus interchange. I felt that this bus interchange was the most viable one for me to redesign as it a place I pass by almost everyday. The simple geometrical elements that make up this place also gave me more flexibility to redesign the space.

Inspiration

After realising that the modernisation of transportation means that spaces used to park cars and buses may be freed in the future, I decided to come up with a way the Bishan bus interchange can be repurposed.

Vegetable booth design (example)

I decided to place booths which people can rent and sell vegetables, food, handmade items etc along the long staircase. This can foster a stronger sense of community among people and showcase Bishan's individuality as everyone offers a piece of themselves in this place :)

Booth dimensions

There are 2 different sizes of booths available, sellers can opt for the bigger or smaller one depending on their needs.

Vertical farming garden

On the third level, people can rent such vertical faming units to grow crops and sell at the booths they rented.

Stairs

The sizes of booths depend on the length of each step.

Level 2 seats

Tessellated seats, round tables and plants are placed on level 2 for people to unwind or enjoy the food they bought. These seats are inspired by the Prisma collection by Derlot and I chose this because I was enticed by the flexibility of this design.
